Klasse B - Schlüsselzahl 78
Driving licence category B78 permits driving passenger cars with automatic transmission up to 3,500 kg maximum authorized mass. It is not a separate category, but rather a restriction of category B indicated by code 78, which is entered on the licence if the practical test was taken exclusively in an automatic vehicle. It is an alternative to the standard category B licence and allows the holder to fully concentrate on the road, but excludes driving vehicles with manual transmission.
Code 78 on a Class B driving licence means you are only permitted to drive vehicles with automatic transmissions. This is entered if your practical training and test were completed exclusively in an automatic vehicle. To remove this restriction, you can complete additional training in a manual transmission vehicle to have your licence amended to code 197, allowing you to drive manual transmission vehicles as well.
How can you remove the automatic restriction (78)?
Driving lessons:
You must complete at least ten driving lessons of 45 minutes each in a manual transmission vehicle.
Test drive:
You will then complete a 15-minute test drive with a driving instructor to demonstrate your ability to safely operate the manual transmission.
Description:
After successful completion of the training and test drive, you can submit a certificate to your driver's license authority to replace code 78 with code 197. A new driving test is not required.
Additional advantage of the key number 197:
After the re-registration, you are allowed to drive not only manual cars but also automatic vehicles, both domestically and abroad.
Klasse B - Schlüsselzahl 197
The new national key number B197, introduced on 1 April 2021, offers the possibility of driving manual cars even if the driving test was taken in an automatic vehicle, provided the following conditions are met:
10 driving lessons of 45 minutes each in a vehicle with a manual transmission.
A 15-minute test drive with a driving instructor in a vehicle with a manual transmission.
Issuance of a corresponding certificate (proof of shifting competence) by the driving school.
Klasse B - BF 17
The BF17 driving licence, also known as " accompanied driving from age 17 ", allows young people to drive a car at the age of 17, but only when accompanied by one or more previously registered accompanying persons. The main goal is to give novice drivers the necessary confidence on the road by allowing them to gain practical experience.
This is how BF17 works
Registration: Registration at the driving school is possible from the age of 16.5.
Training: The driver training is the same as for a regular Class B driver's license.
Examinations: The theory test can be taken no earlier than three months, and the practical test no earlier than one month before the 17th birthday.
Certificate: After passing the test, you will receive a test certificate, which serves as a provisional driver's license. This certificate is only valid in Germany and Austria and must always be carried together with an official form of identification.
Regular driving licence: On your 18th birthday, the test certificate can be exchanged at the driving licence office for the regular EU driving licence in credit card format.
Requirements for the accompanying person
Be at least 30 years old.
Have held a Class B driving licence for at least 5 years without interruption.
Have a maximum of one point in the driver fitness register (Flensburg).
Maintain a blood alcohol limit of 0.5 per mille while driving.
The accompanying person must be named on the examination certificate. It is possible to add further accompanying persons later.
Rules for driving at 17
Until their 18th birthday, a registered accompanying person must always travel with them. This person can sit in the front passenger seat or in the back seat.
The accompanying person provides guidance but has no authority to intervene. The learner driver remains the sole driver.
Travel without an accompanying person is not permitted.
